Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits Online

Each year millions of Americans find that they become unable to work due to some kind of medical condition, and need to make an application for social security benefits to make a disability claim.

Applying for SSI and SSDI benefit is now being made easier with the technology of the Internet, and a visit to socialsecurity.gov can start the process of filing a disability claim.

Applying online for disability benefits offers several advantages:
You can start your disability claim immediately.  There is no need to wait for an appointment
You can apply from the convenience of your own home or on any computer
You avoid trips to a Social Security office, saving you time and money

You can use the online application to apply for benefits if you:
are age 18 or older
have worked and paid Social Security taxes long enough to qualify ?
have a medical condition that has prevented you from working or is expected to prevent you from working for at least 12 months or end in death
reside in the United States or one of its territories/commonwealths

The definition of disability under Social Security is different than other programs. Social Security pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.
"Disability" under Social Security is based on your inability to work. We consider you disabled under Social Security rules if:
You cannot do work that you did before
We decide that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s); and
Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.

The whole process of filing a social security disability claim can take anything from three to six months, but will be speedier if you have all the relevant medical and work history information to fully complete the application at the outset.  There is plenty of assistance, and a step-by-step checklist, when you make your application online.  You will also find that there are outside agencies that can offer assistance.  Some people even choose to have a law firm support them in their application.
